Product Description:
The Mammut Genesis 8.5mm Super dry is a robust, heavy-duty half-rope for alpine and icefall climbing. A favoured rope among British climbers’ heading to the Gorms or the Ben in winter. The Genesis Super dry is great for use on ice and alpine terrain. Its dry treatment inhibits water absorption. Wet ropes are more difficult to handle. If they freeze their dynamic performance is drastically reduced.

Impregnated ropes are an additional safety factor for alpinists, especially on ice, mixed ground and in winter. Whereas in conventional ropes it is usually only the sheath fibres that are dry-treated, Mammut ropes are dry-treated throughout the core and sheath, i.e. the whole rope is impregnated. This superdry treatment ensures a more effective and durable impregnation of the rope, while improving handling, resistance to friction and dirt, and durability.

The advantages of half rope use include less rope drag on wandering routes, full-length rappels, and a higher safety margin from rock fall and rope-cutting. The downside is the added weight and increased rope management complexity, and the individual strands are not as strong in test fall ratings.
  • Super dry treatment
  • Midpoint mark: All Mammut dynamic ropes have a friction proof, coloured midpoint mark. The colouring agent is carefully chosen to avoid impairing the sheath or core of the rope
  • Rope ends: The core of a rope tends to slip against the sheath during use. A problem arises when core and sheath start to separate and twist at the ends. This does not happen with Mammut ropes because the ends are securely welded by an ultrasonic process. The core and sheath fuse to form a perfect con-nection at each end, for the entire life of the rope

Double ropes
The weight and strength of half ropes lies between the values for single and twin ropes. Half ropes only offer standard conforming security when used in pairs, although the climber can choose between the twin rope technique, whereby both ropes run parallel through the pieces of pro, and the half rope technique, whereby there is a left-hand and a right-hand strand running clipped alternately through belays at different heights (e.g. when belays are wide apart). For the half rope technique a securing method must be used that allows independent looping-in and detachment.

When used singly, half ropes are tested with 55 kg fall weight and must resist 5 standard falls, with a diameter of 8-9 mm and 42-55 g per metre. Used singly, they are suitable for additional securing, for example if there are two other climbers on the rope.

Notice: Snow and ice crystals may be small, but they have very sharp edges, can penetrate the rope and damage the fibres. Crampons can also damage ropes. Careful handling and permanent check-ups of your ropes are essential.
